The company you, my subscribers, commute to every morning with a cup of coffee, the organization that makes you count down the days to payday—it might not need you anymore in a few years. No, let me correct that. It will likely change into a structure that doesn't need most of its employees. You think this is some baseless, clickbaity YouTube talk? lol Nope. This is part of an unstoppable, massive change that has already begun, and it's because of the topic we're diving deep into today: the advent of the 'Lightweight Civilization.'
This is a concept proposed by big data expert Song Gil-young. The term might sound a bit difficult and academic, but for non-developers, planners, marketers, designers, and PMs like us, it's a very real and brutal story directly linked to our survival. Imagine an era where a few people, armed with a powerful weapon like an Iron Man suit called AI, can easily handle tasks that once required hundreds or even thousands of people. That 'Era of Lightweight Civilization' is right in front of us—no, it has already opened the door and walked in.
In today's video, I'll break down what this terrifying but essential 'Lightweight Civilization' is, why this seismic shift is starting right now, and most importantly, what on earth we need to do to survive this massive wave without getting swept away. I'll do this from my realistic perspective as a 6-year AI startup PM and former designer. You know the drill, right? My channel is all about raw information and hard-hitting insights, unedited, while I work my day job. There are no fancy captions or effects, but I've packed it only with the essential info that will save you precious time, so even if it's a bit long today, please focus until the end. This one video will probably make you rethink your entire career path.
Okay, first, let's properly define what this 'Lightweight Civilization' is. The term literally means 'Lightweight Civilization.' It's easier to understand if you think of its opposite. Yes, that would be 'Heavyweight Civilization.' The world we've lived in so far, the civilization humanity has built for about 200 years since the Industrial Revolution, is this Heavyweight Civilization. Giant factories, tens of thousands of employees, massive capital investments, and the complex bureaucracy and pyramid organizations to manage it all. Everything has been driven towards a single goal: economies of scale. For example, building a single car factory costs trillions of won and requires thousands, even tens of thousands, of people. You have to dig the land, erect the building, set up the production lines, hire and train people... This is the classic symbol of a Heavyweight Civilization. It's heavy, massive, and takes enormous time and money to change direction. Just like how a giant oil tanker has to start preparing kilometers in advance to make a turn. Inefficiency and slowness were the unavoidable fate of being massive.
But the Lightweight Civilization is the exact opposite of all this. It's like a jet ski zipping past that oil tanker, so to speak. You've heard of the messenger app Telegram, right? The one many of you use because of its good security. Do you know how many employees run this massive service used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide? Don't be surprised: it's just 30 people. Midjourney, which stunned the world with its image-generating AI, has 40. A company called Base44 is run by a single person and is valued at trillions of won. Does that even make sense? lol This is the reality of the Lightweight Civilization. It's about using AI technology as a lever to achieve incredible things with a small number of people, things that were unimaginable in the past. It's like one person in an Iron Man suit taking on an entire division or corps of an army. And in this analogy, the Iron Man suit is AI.
Ultimately, the core values of the Lightweight Civilization are just two things: 'extreme efficiency' and 'insane speed.' While the giant corporations of the Heavyweight Civilization hold countless meetings to decide whether to even do a project, revise reports dozens of times, and line up to get executive approvals, lightweight organizations just execute. When an idea comes up, they build a prototype in a few hours, check the market reaction, and revise immediately. This is because the decision-making process is practically non-existent. The fact that organizations and individuals with this overwhelming speed are emerging as competitors in the market—this is the core of the change we are facing.
So, why is this change hitting us like a tsunami right 'now'? Why not 10 years ago? Why now? You probably have a vague idea of the answer already. The explosive emergence of 'Generative AI' was the catalyst. Song Gil-young calls November 30, 2022—the day ChatGPT was first released to the public—'The Day.' He argues it's a civilizational singularity, a point where human history can be divided into before and after.
Why is this so important? Because for the first time in human history, we are seeing the 'commoditization of intelligence.' In the past, specific knowledge or skills—like coding ability, design sense, or legal expertise—were the exclusive domain of a few experts, right? They were things you could only obtain through immense time and effort. But now, thanks to AI, anyone—literally anyone—can whip up expert-level results in no time. Last year, the average IQ of AI services was below 100, but this year, it's reportedly close to 140. In just one year. For reference, the average human IQ is 100. lol Now we have a colleague who is much smarter than us, doesn't sleep, doesn't complain about salary, and works tirelessly 24/7/365. It doesn't even form a union. From a company's perspective, of course they're going to use it, right?
What's even scarier is the explosive growth of 'prosumer' services that allow individuals to use these smart AIs as much as they want for just $20 a month. The paid version of ChatGPT you're using, Midjourney, and the numerous coding assistance tools all fall into this category. People have actually started using these to pay $20 and make hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of dollars. We've entered an era where a single talented designer can subscribe to a few AI image generation and video editing tools and do all the work that a small advertising agency used to handle, all by themselves. A single developer, using an AI coding assistant, can finish a project in two days that would have taken a team of five a full week in the past.
With things as they are, a dynamic is forming where individuals and companies compete directly. We now have this absurd situation where a design agency that pays rent and benefits for dozens of employees has to compete with a single freelance designer working from home. In terms of fixed costs and speed, is it even a competition? So, to survive, companies also start tightening their belts and trimming the fat. They're scrambling to make their organizations as lean as possible. They've started a grueling diet towards 'lightweighting.' This is the essence of what is happening right now, this very moment, in every industry across the globe.
Now for the most important part. This might be uncomfortable to hear, but it's a reality we must face head-on. So, how exactly will this maelstrom of massive change affect your work life and career? This isn't a story about the distant future. This is our story, right now.
