That company you commute to every morning with a cup of coffee, the organization that makes you count down the days to payday, might not need you anymore in a few years. No, let me correct myself. It will likely transform into a structure that doesn't need most of its employees. Are you thinking this is just some clickbait-y, pie-in-the-sky YouTube talk? haha. It's not. This is part of a massive, unstoppable change that has already begun, and it's because of the advent of the 'Lightweight Civilization,' our deep-dive topic for today.
It's a concept proposed by the big data expert, author Song Gil-young. The term might sound a bit difficult and academic, but in reality, for non-developers, planners, marketers, designers, and PMs like us, it's a very real and brutal story directly linked to our survival. Imagine an era where a few people, equipped with the powerful weapon of AI—like an Iron Man suit—can easily accomplish tasks that once required hundreds or even thousands of people. That's right, the 'era of Lightweight Civilization' is already at our doorstep, no, it has already opened the door and walked in.
In today's video, I'll break down what this terrifying but essential 'Lightweight Civilization' is, why this seismic shift is happening right now, and most importantly, what on earth we need to do to survive this massive wave without getting swept away. I'll share my very realistic perspective, drawing from my six years as a PM and former designer at an AI startup. You know the drill—my channel is all about raw information and hard-hitting insights, made while working my day job, with no editing. Okay, first, let's get a proper handle on what this 'Lightweight Civilization' thing is. The characters literally mean 'light' (輕) and 'weight' (量). It simply means a 'lightweight civilization.' To understand this concept, it's easier to think of its opposite. Yes, that would be the 'Heavyweight Civilization' (重量 文明). The world we've lived in until now, the civilization built up over the roughly 200 years since the Industrial Revolution, is the Heavyweight Civilization. Giant factories, tens of thousands of employees, massive facility investments, and the complex bureaucracy and pyramid-like organizations to manage it all. Everything was geared towards a single goal: economies of scale. For example, building a single car factory costs trillions of won and requires thousands, even tens of thousands, of workers, right? Digging the ground, erecting buildings, installing production lines, hiring and training people... this is the classic symbol of a Heavyweight Civilization. It's heavy, massive, and takes enormous time and money to change direction. It's like a giant oil tanker that needs to start preparing several kilometers in advance just to make a turn. Inefficiency and slow speed were the fate of being massive.
But the Lightweight Civilization is the exact opposite of all this. You could say it's like a jet ski zipping past that oil tanker. You know the messaging app Telegram, right? The one many of you use for its good security. Do you know how many employees run this massive service used by hundreds of millions worldwide? Don't be surprised—it's just 30 people. Midjourney, which stunned the world with its image-generating AI, has 40. And a company called Base44 is run by a single person and is valued in the trillions of won. Does that even make sense? haha. This is the reality of the Lightweight Civilization. With just a few people, using AI as leverage, they can achieve incredible things that were unimaginable in the past. It's like one person in an Iron Man suit taking on an entire division or army corps. In this analogy, the Iron Man suit is AI.
Ultimately, the core values of the Lightweight Civilization are just two things: 'extreme efficiency' and 'insane speed.' While the giant corporations of the Heavyweight Civilization hold countless meetings to decide whether to do a project, revise reports dozens of times, and line up for executive approval, lightweight organizations just do it. When an idea comes up, they create a prototype in a few hours, check the market reaction, and revise it immediately. It's because there's virtually no decision-making process. The fact that organizations and individuals with this overwhelming speed are now emerging as competitors in the market—this is the core of the change we are facing.
So, why is this change hitting us like a tsunami right now? Why not 10 years ago, and why today? You subscribers probably have a faint idea of the answer. The explosive emergence of 'Generative AI' was the trigger. Author Song Gil-young calls November 30, 2022, the day ChatGPT was first released to the public, 'The Day.' He argues it's a civilizational singularity, a point where human history can be divided into before and after.
Why is this so important? Because for the first time in human history, the 'commoditization of intelligence' has begun. In the past, specific knowledge or skills—like coding ability, design sense, or legal knowledge—were the exclusive domain of a few experts. They were things you could only obtain through immense time and effort. But now, thanks to AI, anyone, literally anyone, can whip up expert-level results in an instant. Last year, the average IQ of AI services was below 100, but this year, it's approaching 140. In just one year. For reference, the average human IQ is 100. haha. We now have colleagues who are much smarter than us, don't sleep, don't complain about their salary, and work tirelessly 24/7/365. They don't even form unions. From a company's perspective, of course they're going to use them, right?
What's scarier is the explosive growth of 'Prosumer' services in the market, which allow individuals to use these smart AIs freely for just $20 a month, or a few ten-thousand won. The paid version of ChatGPT you're using, Midjourney, and countless coding assistance tools all fall into this category. People are actually starting to pay $30 to earn $300, $3,000, or even $30,000 with these tools. For example, we're now in an era where one talented designer can subscribe to a few AI image generation and video editing tools and do all the work that a small advertising agency used to do, all by themselves. A single developer, using an AI coding assistant, can finish a project in two days that would have taken a team of five a week in the past.
With things turning out this way, a structure is being created where individuals and companies compete directly. A design agency that has dozens of employees, pays rent, and covers their social insurance now has to compete with a single freelance designer working from home. It's a ridiculous situation. In terms of fixed costs and speed, can they even compete? As a result, companies are also starting to tighten their belts and shed fat to survive. They are desperately trying to make their organizations lighter. They've begun a tearful diet towards 'light-weighting.' This is the essence of what is happening right now, at this very moment, in every industry around the world.
Now for the most important part. It might be uncomfortable to hear, but it's a reality you must face. So, how will this massive whirlwind of change specifically affect your company life and career? This is by no means a story about the distant future; it's about us, right now.
